Formed in 2009, Hatful of Rain have attracted an affectionate following with their fusion of folk and Americana sounds. Known for their emotive storytelling, warm performances and great harmonies – not to mention their own unique genre – “melonjolly” (cheerful tunes with miserable lyrical content), the band has been praised for their ability to blend traditional forms of old time and bluegrass music to their own ends. Their previous albums “Way Up on the Hill”, “The Morning Key” and “Songs of the Lost and Found” garnered critical acclaim, sessions with Bob Harris and many plays by Mike Harding and Mark Ratcliffe on the Radio 2 Folk Shows.
Phil has a 50 year history in writing and making music. From the working man's clubs of South Wales through to performing in Europe and some of the UK's premier concert and festival stages.
Phil began as a teenager, playing bass in cabaret bands, backing whatever singer was booked that night, squeezed between the bingo and meat raffle. The late seventies saw in him in London as part of the burgeoning post-punk free jazz scene, during the early 80s he was picked up by Cherry Red records and contributed to a number of the labels releases, including a brief spell in Felt. his long held love for folk and Americana led to him forming Hatful of Rain - a successful period of recording and touring, appearing on national radio and big stages.
Upon reaching his early 60s Phil finally turned to his own music in his own way. The culmination is St Peter's Thumb his debut solo album - which was released on 17th November 2022 on Long Way Home Productions.
Nicola is a singer Songwriter based in Sussex. Her folk/ country songs are instantly relatable with hook filled melodies that draws the listener in and singing along.
Nicola likes to co-write and write for other artists mostly but can be coaxed out to play ‘for one night only’ events, her warm and engaging performance always leaving the audience wanting more.
The albums are instrumental music made by Dave Searby Mason, author and musician. Random sounds have influenced the musical landscapes, occurrences like sudden rain on a tin roof, or a gust of wind in the trees, or a passing flock of
birds flapping or voices echoing in a large hall, heard but not deciphered. Perhaps walking along a street, and tapping a metal lamppost, to find it hollow
and it rings like a bell, ( standing in the street tapping it as passers-by stare ).Sounds heard in the world outside, converted into music inside, perhaps hinting at some submerged deeper symmetry, felt rather than understood, then, launched back out into the world.
Jonny is a well travelled singer songwriter and former frontman of Brighton based rowdy welsh rhythm rockers The Sign-On Valley Rangers. Jonny’s songs display a wide array of world influences and reflect the passionate and vital lyrical style of Strummer, Cash and Marley, the people he references as his greatest inspiration. ‘I like to think about every word, every line and sing them in a way that stirs the emotions’. His first solo album, ‘East of the Rising’ showcases his resonant Celtic vocal style and reflects the strong influences of his up bringing in the South Wales valleys.
